So What are WordPress Users and how do we create them?

In brief, a user is a person who has permission to either administrate or edit your website, with either full or limited rights .

We will go into detail about setting up users with these permissions below.

To get started, log into the admin on the left-hand-side and click on users

By default you will see one user (admin). This will be you as you are the Administrator of the website.

As you can see, this will give you all the basic information about the user. It will tell you the role of that person (in this case, the Administrator). On the left-hand side of the username, you will see either an image or an empty grey box. This is known as the “Gravatar” ( we will show you how to add a Gravatar later). Your Gravatar is an image and public profile that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums.

Now click on the edit button next to the Gravatar.

This will allow you to edit your profile setting. It will allow you to change the admin color scheme, ( you can also do this on anybody’s profile)

Other things you can do are:

Enable shortcut keys, which can speed up workflow.
Edit your first name and last name.
Change your display names. (if you wanted)
Edit the email address
Edit the Bio. The Bio would contain information relating to your professional life. If you have permission to create and add blogs or comments, people will see your Bio.
Change your password.

As your website grows, you may need to find new employees to control different parts of your site. You can do this by setting up permissions for each employee.

You need to do this not only for security, but also so your new employees don’t get access to everything on your website. To do this, click users and then add new.

On the next page you have a few options available. First you can create a username and password and add their email address.

At the bottom of the page you can then assign them a role permissions. There are five main roles. Subscriber, Contributor Author, Editor or Admin

A Subscriber can log in to the site and change their password. They don’t have any permissions to edit or change any content.

A Contributor can add posts (to the site) and edit them, but they wouldn’t have permission to upload them.

An Author can write, edit, publish or moderate comments on the site.

An Editor can moderate, edit posts, delete comments.

The Administrator has full control of the website and can do anything.!

NEVER GIVE ANYONE YOU DON’T KNOW ADMIN RIGHTS; You could be at risk of losing the site itself.

After adding a new user, go back into users; This will display all users that have been assigned to your website. You, as the admin, can manage them all from there.

Depending on what user role you are logged in as, the left dashboard menu , you will only have available options for your user’s profile.
